Purpose

Describe the main purpose of the job.

The Multimedia Developer is a highly creative position, responsible for the creation and organization of all media elements related to online course development. The position requires the conceptualization, development and development of vector and raster graphics, audio, video, animations, simulations, games, interactive, multimedia learning objects for online courses. This position functions as an in-house “instructional artist” and multimedia expert working collaboratively with faculty and eCampus Center instructional designers to design and develop multimedia objects that meet specific instructional and learning objectives.  designing, producing, and managing creative multimedia elements that enhance online courses. This role involves developing graphics, animations, videos, interactive learning objects, and simulations to meet instructional goals. Collaborating closely with faculty and instructional designers, the Multimedia Developer ensures all deliverables align with educational objectives and accessibility standards while maintaining university branding.

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field from an accredited college or university (graphicsgraphic design, instructional technology, new media design, interactive design, or a related field ). Or, any from an accredited institution; OR equivalent combination of education and /or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in interactive media design and development experience, including:

    • Demonstrated ability to design and develop instructional graphics media from concept to delivery, with a proven track record of meeting deadlines.

    • Expertise and experience with using graphics and multimedia development software (Designing and delivering instructional media with adherence to deadlines.

    • Proficiency with multimedia development tools (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Camtasia Studio, Adobe Creative Suite/Creative Cloud applications, Adobe Captivate, etc., Camtasia Studio).

    • Experience shooting and editing video

      Knowledge of CODECs used

      Video production and editing skills, including experience with green-screen techniques and knowledge of CODECs for online video streaming

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree in graphic design, instructional technology, new media design, interactive design or related field from an accredited college or university may be of benefita related field.

  • Five (5) years of demonstrated experience creating graphics and multimedia for instructional purposes.

  • Experience creating developing accessible, interactive graphics for a web-based environment (Edge Animate, graphics (e.g., Adobe Captivate, Storyline, etc).)

  • Understanding Knowledge of instructional design principles a plus.Understanding of and HTML5/CSS3 development, including interactive and animation tools for HTML5/CSS3 delivery.

  • Experience working with and deploying interactive content within Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard) .

  • Experience with project management, team leadership and systems implementation and development.

  • Experience with systems used for distance education and supporting instructors and users in an academic environment is a significant plus.

  • Work experience in higher education.

  • Recent experience with or knowledge of most of the following software tools or similar products:

  • LMS: such as Blackboard Learn.

  • Web-based content creation/HTML editors: such as WordPress. 

  • Web conferencing: such as Blackboard Collaborate.

  • Supervisory experience is a plusand web content management tools (e.g., WordPress).

  • Experience in higher education, including supporting distance education systems.

  • Project management or team leadership experience.

  • Apply your experience and knowledge: with best practices to create accessible web sites and multimedia learning objects; with usability/accessibility requirements such as ADA, universal design strategies in online learning environments; and WCAG 2.# Accessibility Initiative and Guidelines.

Prioritize and handle multiple, complex, demanding projects simultaneously, while approaching and solving design problems quickly and creatively. Efficiently manage personal work time and effort.

Key Responsibilities

50% of Time the Position must:

Media Development

  • Apply visual design best practice principles to the design and development of static and interactive elements (graphics, videos, animations, interactive simulations, etc.) to meet specific learning objectives and enhance instruction for online courses, while maintaining university branding/graphics standards.

  • Collaborate with instructional designers and faculty to understand specific objectives for learning and provides options to meet their media needs.

  • Provide initial conception (storyboarding, etc.) and estimates for media development. Develop layout and concept designs for approvals. 

  • Record and edit video and audio for multimedia based learning objects, and may provide direction/assistance to students who assist with video editing.

  • Communicate project status and risks to project leaders and stakeholders

    , including HTML5/CSS3 knowledge.

  • Functional understanding of user-centric design and accessibility best practices (ADA, WCAG 2.0+).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities.

Essential Functions

Media Development (50%)

  • Design and develop multimedia elements such as graphics, videos, animations, and simulations to meet specific learning objectives.

  • Collaborate with faculty and instructional designers to conceptualize and storyboard media projects.

  • Record and edit video and audio content, ensuring accessibility for diverse learners.

  • Research new tools and techniques to improve the student online experience in courses developed at the eCampus Center.

  • Become proficient in new multimedia tools and innovative techniques to apply that content in an online environment.

  • Perform usability testing and quality assurance of media

    elements used in online courses. Ensure media is accessible for all users, including those with disabilities.
  • Introduce innovative design and leverage technology to produce media objects that meet instructional goals and learning objectives.

  • In collaboration with the eCampus Center Development and Support Team:

    • Design visual interfaces for improving the user experience with portal/course/module web pages.

    • Design and develop dynamic/media-rich web pages. Ensure online course content is accessible for all users and can be viewed on various devices (mobile, multiple browsers, etc.).

30% of the Time the Position must:

Media Research and Development

  • Provide assets.

  • Maintain compliance with accessibility standards and copyright guidelines.

Media Research and Development (30%)

  • Research emerging tools and techniques to enhance the online learning experience.

  • Create and maintain a portfolio of innovative media elements for the instructional designers to reference when designing and developing courses with faculty.

  • Provide accessibility information on all new technology and multimedia used in online courses.

10% of the Time the Position must:

Media Management & Support

  • Manage and maintain the creative content and templates used for media development in online courses. Provide support in effectively and efficiently converting and storing multimedia materials online.

  • Ensure all media used in online courses meets accessibility and copyright guidelines. 

  • Ensure consistency, accuracy and compliance of media objects with required standards.

  • Evaluate new multimedia tools for their accessibility and applicability to online courses.

Media Management and Support (10%)

  • Manage templates and creative content for online courses.

  • Provide media expertise and guidance to other team members of the team. Support course tools used by instructors for

  • Support faculty and staff in using media creation .

  • Oversee student workers supporting the creation of all media elements for online courses.

5% of Time the Position must:
