Google Doc assignment instructions

This article provides tips for instructing students how to collaborate in a shared Google document.

Description

Adapt these instructions for activities that require student collaboration in a single Google doc.

Each person uses a different color

  1. Individually review each learning objective and decide which feature is present (+) or absent (-). Add a plus or minus in each column in the shared document, applying the same color for all your entries so different colors distinguish different authors.

Review and comment on individual contributions

  1. After the due date for individual contributions has passed, review the contributions from the other members of your group.

  2. Next, insert a Comment (on a specific entry) or a Question (at the bottom of the page) to further the discussion on areas of agreement or discrepancy between members of the group.

Discuss and/or collaborate

  1. As a group, discuss the comments and questions posed to reach a clearer understanding of the issues.

  2. Use the comments and questions to revise the learning objectives so that all features are present by either 1) dividing the revisions among participating members of the group, or 2) collaborating as a group. In both cases, please try to include the best ideas from each of your responses.
