Flip: An Example and Instructions for linking to Flip (no LTI)

This article shares an example for incorporating Flip into an online course when linking to Flip with a URL without using the Flip integration (LTI). These instructions are provided as examples only. They are not meant to address every potential scenario. Feel free to use them as a guide and edit them for your own course needs. If your course is a part of a fully online program, please refer to the program specifications and activity directions.

Assumptions When Using Flip Linking Approach

This example of student-facing instructions comes from a course where:

  • Students are accessing Flip for the first time in the course.

  • The course (or master template, where in use) has a web link to direct students to Flip.

  • The teaching faculty updates the web link URLs with the Flip URL before opening a course to students.

  • After the first use of Flip, students are instructed to "use the same steps to access Flip, go to..." rather than repeating all the instructions with each Flip activity.

Preparing Flip for Your Course Discussions the First Time

  1. Go to Flip. Use (or create) a Login with your Boise State instructor account.

  2. Click Create a Group and name it for your course. (Example: Introduction to Learning)

    1. In the “Permissions” section, click Student Email, then add “@u.boisestate.edu” and “boisestate.edu” in the space provided.

    2. Save the group.

  3. Create a Topic named [Assignment Name].

    1. In the “Prompt” area enter, “See Canvas instructions,”

    2. In “Essentials” adjust the recording time to your preference.

    3. Click Create Topic to save, then close the pop-up window.

    4. Repeat this step for each Flip activity in the course.

See the section below labeled Linking Flip to Canvas for the next steps.

Preparing Flip when Repeating a Course

If you have taught a course previously, you can set up the Flip “Group” by copying a previous group.

  1. Login to Flip with your Boise State instructor account.

  2. Locate the Flip Group from the previous semester. Next to the group name, select Duplicate Group from the “Actions” button.

  3. Be sure to rename your group for the current semester.

Continue the setup process in the Linking Flip to Canvas section below.

Canvas Settings and Grading for a Flip Activity

For Flip activities that are linked (and not using the Flip LTI):

  • Create the activity directions in an assignment.

  • In the “Submission Type” menu, choose No Submission.

  • When grading, manually enter the grade/points in the Gradebook. You can view and respond to student videos directly in Flip.

Linking Flip to Canvas

Once the Flip group topics are created in Flip and the assignment is drafted in Canvas:

  1. Click Share next to the Topic in Flip, then Copy the URL.

  2. In the assignment, add the URL to the assignment information. Using the example above, one would edit the assignment name in Step 2 by making it a hyperlink to the topic URL just copied.

  3. Be sure to Save any changes made in an assignment.
