Job Description

Position Overview

  • Business Title: Multimedia Developer

  • Position Reports to: Lane Donovan

Purpose

The Multimedia Developer is responsible for designing, producing, and managing creative multimedia elements that enhance online courses. This role involves developing graphics, animations, videos, interactive learning objects, and simulations to meet instructional goals. Collaborating closely with faculty and instructional designers, the Multimedia Developer ensures all deliverables align with educational objectives and accessibility standards while maintaining university branding.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience)

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, instructional technology, new media design, interactive design, or a related field from an accredited institution; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three (3) years of experience in interactive media design and development, including:

    • Designing and delivering instructional media with adherence to deadlines.

    • Proficiency with multimedia development tools (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud, Camtasia Studio).

    • Video production and editing skills, including experience with green-screen techniques and knowledge of CODECs for online video streaming.

    • Audio recording and editing experience.

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree in a related field.

  • Five (5) years of experience creating multimedia for instructional purposes.

  • Experience developing accessible, interactive web-based graphics (e.g., Adobe Captivate, Storyline).

  • Knowledge of instructional design principles and HTML5/CSS3 development.

  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard) and web content management tools (e.g., WordPress).

  • Experience in higher education, including supporting distance education systems.

  • Project management or team leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in PC and Mac environments.

  • Strong graphic and web design skills, including HTML5/CSS3 knowledge.

  • Functional understanding of user-centric design and accessibility best practices (ADA, WCAG 2.0+).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to shifting priorities.

  • Strong collaboration skills to effectively work with faculty, students, and staff of varying technical skill levels.

  • Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and continuous learning.

Essential Functions

Media Development (50%)

  • Design and develop multimedia elements such as graphics, videos, animations, and simulations to meet specific learning objectives.

  • Collaborate with faculty and instructional designers to conceptualize and storyboard media projects.

  • Record and edit video and audio content, ensuring accessibility for diverse learners.

  • Perform usability testing and quality assurance of media assets.

  • Maintain compliance with accessibility standards and copyright guidelines.

Media Research and Development (30%)

  • Research emerging tools and techniques to enhance the online learning experience.

  • Create and maintain a portfolio of innovative media elements.

  • Evaluate new multimedia tools for their accessibility and applicability to online courses.

Media Management and Support (10%)

  • Manage templates and creative content for online courses.

  • Provide media expertise and guidance to team members.

  • Support faculty and staff in using media creation tools effectively.

Organizational Engagement (5%)

  • Build collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the university.

  • Contribute to division goals and support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

  • Represent the university in a professional manner in committees, task forces, and external engagements.

Professional Development (5%)

  • Develop and execute a professional growth plan in collaboration with a supervisor.

  • Dedicate time to networking, research, and skill development.

  • Stay updated on trends in online education and share knowledge with the team.

Supervision

  • No regular responsibility for supervising employees.

  • May oversee student workers on specific projects.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • General office setting with occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds.

  • Position may allow remote work arrangements, subject to departmental approval.

Travel Requirements

  • Occasional local travel to campuses or professional development events (approximately 5%).
