The Toolbox for Designing Assessments contains an extensive compilation of helpful ideas, strategies, examples, and resources to assist you in building each of the four types of assessments. The toolbox contains a lot of materials, so please self-select which content to review.

  1. Review your assessment plan.

  2. Focus on a single assessment that you want to design for your course.

  3. Consider into which of Stiggins' four categories that single assessment fits:

    1. Selected Response Assessments

    2. Written Assessments

    3. Performance Assessments

    4. Personal Communication Assessments

  4. Keep in mind that an assessment may fall into more than one category. For instance, if you are creating a group project that will involve writing, you will probably want to look at the folders for both writing and for performance.

  5. Read about specific examples and techniques related to the assessment type you wish to design.

  6. Skim the other folders for additional ideas as desired.
