This toolbox contains resources on assessments organized using Richard Stiggins' four categories of assessment. This information may help you:

  • Garner ideas and best practices for assessment types you've already chosen

  • Discover new possibilities for your assessment plan that you may not have thought of before

  • Gather how-tos and other resources to actually build the assessments for your course.

Using the Toolbox

The Toolbox for Designing Assessments contains an extensive compilation of helpful ideas, strategies, examples, and resources to assist you in building each of the four types of assessments. The toolbox contains a lot of materials, so please self-select which content to review.

  1. Review your assessment plan.

  2. Focus on a single assessment that you want to design for your course.

  3. Consider into which of Stiggins' four categories that single assessment fits:

    1. Selected Response Assessments

    2. Written Assessments

    3. Performance Assessments

    4. Personal Communication Assessments

  4. Keep in mind that an assessment may fall into more than one category. For instance, if you are creating a group project that will involve writing, you will probably want to look at the folders for both writing and for performance.

  5. Read about specific examples and techniques related to the assessment type you wish to design.

  6. Skim the other folders for additional ideas as desired.

As you sort through the assessment types and think about what you want to build, remember that the Boise State help desk (208-426-4357 or helpdesk@boisestate.edu) can assist you with technical questions.
