The following lists are potential pros, cons, and recommendations as discussed and/or discovered in the process of course development for a specific course design and development project. Different projects/ faculty will likely have varying views on what counts as a pro or a con.

PROs

  • Flip and Canvas instructions live in one place

    • Students can access the topic for a first recorded response, or select any peers who have already posted—watch their video and, in turn, reply with a video

    • Students do not require a Flip account

  • Grading column automatically created in Grades

CONs

  • Rubrics associated with the assignment in Canvas may not copy over or function as expected in a teaching shell.

  • Speedgrader appears to provide access to only one (the first) post/reply rather than all student contributions

  • Teaching faculty must add the Flip app upon receiving their teaching site

  • Teaching faculty must edit the settings for each Flip LTI assignment in the course

Recommendations When Using the LTI in Canvas

  • Do NOT load the assignment in a new tab when creating a Flip LTI assignment. This may separate any instruction provided in Canvas from the topic in Flip where students will respond to the instructions or prompts.

  • Post rubrics in the course site as separate documents (e.g., Google Docs) to be used in tandem with faculty viewing and grading of Flip LTI Assignments.

  • Leverage existing Canvas LTI Integration and Flip Help Center resources for both faculty and students as both applications are prone to continuous updates.

  • In the Master Course

    • Build as a No Submission Assignment

    • Include all details (instructions, prompt, points, et cetera), but leave it as a regular assignment

    • The instructor will create Flip Integration and topics ahead of opening the live course.
